For a physical therapist, a physical therapist assistant, an athletic trainer or other allied health professional to be recognized as being a specialist in a certain area or being recognized as a specialist in a certain technique, he/she must be in compliance with the following:
- Five years of experience as a physical therapist, as a physical therapist assistant, an athletic trainer or another allied health professional, either clinically, academically, having conducting research, or a combination of those.
- At least two years of the past five years worked included specialization in the evaluation and treatment of patients with that particular condition or having treated with that particular technique
- Having completed a minimum of 50 post-graduate continuing education hours (CEU’s/CME’s) within the past 5 years in their specific specialty area
- Having treated a minimum of 50 patients with that particular condition, or having treated 50 patients with that specific technique
- In order to maintain his/her status, completion of 15 CE credits (this can be a combination of type one and type two activities) every 2 years in the area of specialization, to be completed at the bi-annual renewal of their license to practice
- For this purpose, CEU hours can be divided in two types:
- Type 1: courses (attended and/or taught). "Course" means an organized program of study, classroom experience or similar educational experience that is directly related to the specialty, and approved or provided by one of the organizations or any of its components as described by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy: http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/physicaltherapy/pt_faq.htm#Continuing%20Education
- Type 2: consultation with colleagues, independent study, lectures attended and/or presented, published articles or research papers in professional journals, chapters written in textbooks, attended scientific meetings or post-graduate educational degrees. In addition, any documented time spent observing in a clinical setting or university with experienced healthcare professionals in that particular area of specialization.
- Their professional license is in good standing
- In lieu of complying with #1, the applicant can comply by being certified “through a recognized set of courses from a reputable company”. This qualification will be evaluated on a one-on-one basis. The decision if this certification will supersede the requirement under #1 will solely be made by the TTN University President.
